Perioral dermatitis

Perioral dermatitis simply means "inflammation of the skin around the mouth". It is a non-contagious skin disorder mainly affecting women. Reddening, flaking and small blisters, some even purulent, are found around the lips, nose, cheeks and chin, and less often on the eyelids. It is quite likely that a specific species of mite is responsible. These mites are normally also present in the sebaceous glands of the face, but may reproduce more intensively than usual, thereby triggering an inflammatory skin reaction.

Treatment can be purely local, internal or a combination of the two. Antibiotic creams are used for topical treatment. They are effective, not because there is a bacterial infection, but because antibiotics also have anti-inflammatory properties. Internal administration of antibiotics speeds up healing.
